Big Fish Small Fish @ IOI City Mall

With the new Phase 2 IOI City Mall being launched late last year, I have more F&B option to explore these days.

Went to try out Big Fish Small Fish during the weekday evening after work.

Surprisingly it was empty, only 3 tables occupied. Ordered the most basic item on the menu...fish & chips. I chose dory fish.

It came with 2 side dishes. I chose coleslaw & mashed potato. Side dishes taste OK-lah, nothing to shout about.

Deep fried dory fish is too oily for my liking, hence i will not order this again. Generous servings of fries.

Apart from the tartar sauce, you can request for other sauces from the counter. There are cheese sauce, curry mayo, chili and ketchup.

Pricewise is on the affordable side, which i see mostly family with kids dine here.

I paid RM22.88 nett for this plate of dory fish & chips, using TnG ewallet (from my birthday 'gift', by company)😀

On another day, I had my 'annual chili pan mee' at Super Kitchen Pan Mee. Seems like (coincidently) i would usually go there once a year during the year end. The price has gone up to RM13 per bowl.

The below was my dinner tapao from Fortune Corner restaurant in Genting. Supposedly nasi lemak with condiments arranged neatly, but when 'tapao-ed' it became like rojak rice. The sambal is not spicy at all.

During my visit to the CU mart (IOI City Mall), I would usually go to their gimbap section to see if there's any product expiring soon and grab some with 20% to 30% discount.

Bought this 'duo gimbap' at RM7.50 (original price RM10) coz it was goin to expire in 1 hour from the time i bought. Had tried it a few times and so far no stomachache (after consuming).

Omega Pork Noodles @ Sri Petaling

[Throwback] Was around the neighbourhood commercial area to run some errands. It was around lunch hour, so I decided to have lunch in one of the shops there...

My first time trying Omega Pork Noodles, despite the shop has been around for quite some time.

Order & payment is made through the counter - just like a fast-food outlet.

The crowded restaurant during peak lunch hour...There were people queuing outside too. At the corner, there is a drink counter/section where customers who buy the drink can refill their cups. Customers can choose any drinks they want - and it's free flow. 

Here's my order -  Soupy pork noodles (without the organs). I choose rice vermicelli and lou shu fun (aka silver needle noodles). A huge pork lard is seen on top of the noodles.

There are a few sauces to choose from the self-service sauce counter...I tried all their chili sauces.

Overall the noodles taste good, i like the bouncy pork balls and minced pork. Flavorful yet without strong porky taste/smell. Done just right!

I will come back again, but not during the peak hour.

Meanwhile it's beginning to feel more like CNY...there are tangerines in the office pantry😀

And i had my annual 'prosperity burger meal' at McD some few weeks ago...

It still taste the same...but the cone sundae price has gone up drastically....it costs around RM1.80 now (somewhere around that price). It used to be RM1.20 on last year.

Family Reunion Lunch

An uncle & his family recently came back to visit the extended family as well as to celebrate his 70th birthday in KL.

Long time ago, the 'extended family' gathering used to be at grandma house. Ever since she left more than 3 decades ago, we have no fixed gathering place but recently we gathered at this 'rich aunt' house which doubled as a soy sauce factory. The soy sauce factory is no longer operating these days, although the remnants (barrels from the factory) are still found in the backyard. 

The rich aunt is also a great cook....she whipped out several dishes within half day in the kitchen...all alone!

Here are the dishes that she had prepared:

Hokkien mee, overloaded with crispy lards

Vinegar pork trotter

Poached spring chicken

Prawns

Blanched beansprout

On top of these, she also ordered roasted duck from a nearby stall...

I was full to the brim from this sumptuous lunch.

The gathering was attended by family members from 3 generations, me being the middle one....It's great to see everyone in the pink of health after a long lockdown.

Late Dinner @ Poppo Kanteen

Lately most of the eateries closed early and stop receiving orders even before 9pm. After 9, there's only a few options left...mostly mamak or fast food that opens till midnite.

Another option is Poppo Kanteen which opens till 11pm.

I prefer to dine in a comfortable environment hence this is the only option left whenever I want to have a warm meal (and dessert)!

I had nasi lemak with 'ayam masak merah' (chicken dish) and a bowl of cendol.

Their nasi lemak is no longer served on the old-fashioned enamel plate (like it used to be). 

The chicken dish was slightly spicy, but overall good.

Cendol was too sweet for my liking. However, it has generous ingredients of cendol, red bean and corn (hidden underneath). 

Despite the hit and misses, i'm satisfied with the meal...well, better than nothing to eat😂 (when most eateries are closed)

Recently i also got indulged in 'milk tea' (without boba), especially on a hot day. This 'classic roasted milk tea with grass jelly' is somewhere around RM7.90....

on another day, i also claimed a FOC ice-cream from Baskin Robbins, when registering new membership (for my parent) via BR app. My choice is always 'Cookies n Cream' flavor.

Eggy Post...

My pre-dinner of mini stroopwaffle (brought by a colleague from Netherlands) and takoyaki.

A 'fusion' of international snacks!

The takoyaki was bought from a campus foodcourt at a very affordable price. RM5 for 5 pieces😀

The takoyaki are hidden beneath the bonito flakes. Tastes similar to those sold in AEON.

The students these days are so pampered to have these snacks sold at their foodcourt, back in my time, we only have bread or biscuits from the campus convenient store.

Meanwhile, on another day.....I had a crazy idea of whipping up something in the office.

The office pantry has egg supplies, full cream milk (meant for the coffee) and sachets of brown sugar.

There is also a sieve and microwave.

so.....ahemmm......my first attempt of making this in the office....

yes, steam egg custard!

instead of 'steam', it was microwaved....

nope, it does not explode...hehehe...

Left it cold for awhile before digging in.

Looks solid...like a real 'steamed' egg....

Meanwhile during my last visit to AEON, i bought a box of German egg tarts at RM8.90 (for 3 pieces)

It tastes like Portuguese egg tarts but in squarish form and thick, non-flaky crust.

On another day, i went to buy egg tarts from the neighbourhood Berry's Cakehouse and RT Bakery just to compare the taste. 

RT Bakery egg tarts are sold in a box of 2 pieces (RM5.40 per box, meaning RM2.70 per piece).

Berry's egg tart comes in single unit wrapped in plastic packaging. RM2.30 per piece (or RM2.20, can't remember!)

RT Bakery egg tart is slightly bigger and heavier by 50gram compared to Berry's, hence it's fair to have a slightly higher price.

Tastewise, almost the same...not much of eggy taste coz the crust is too thick.

I'd prefer the German egg tart from AEON more.

Esquire Kitchen Pastries

[Throwback] During the recent Foodpanda evoucher promo, we took the opportunity to order our favorite Chinese pastries from Esquire Kitchen. We ordered a few times during the evoucher promo period + low delivery cost period, thus a 'double discount'.

Below are chicken siew bao (in triangular shape). It has crispy crust with savoury minced chicken fillings.

They also sell pork siew bao (in round shape) but we prefer the chicken more.

On other days, we tried a variety of pastries such as kaya puff as well as the round shape 'lou poh beng' (wife cake).

I like their kaya puff as it is not overly sweet. The wife cake is not bad too...Huge and generously stuffed with filling.

The price for the pastries (inclusive of delivery) as follows:

*That was in October. We managed to get a better price in November using the 'Ordernow' evoucher which deducts RM10 from the total, making it RM13.15

I'm looking forward for such promo again in the future😋
