Lunch Delivery at Office: Breadfruit

Excerpt from Wikipedia:
Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry and jackfruit family (Moraceae) believed to be a domesticated descendant of Artocarpus camansi originating in New Guinea, the Maluku Islands, and the Philippines.
British and French navigators introduced a few Polynesian seedless varieties to Caribbean islands during the late 18th century. Today it is grown in some 90 countries throughout South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean, Central America and Africa.

Despite from Southeast Asia, I have not seen nor heard of this fruit before. I only know of jackfruit and this breadfruit looks similar to it but in smaller size. I don't think it has big seeds like jackfruit. I only learnt about this fruit from Wiki, as did not get the chance to see the fruit in its raw form.
Anyway, to cut the story short, I've only seen it once - a cooked one. It was introduced by the colleagues in Barbados, as they ordered it for lunch.
Breadfruit is quite common in the Caribbean that the locals cook and turn them into staple.
Here's their local specialty: Pig's tail on breadfruit bowl.
Served with diced pickled cucumbers and tomatoes.
It was grilled till the skin burnt (which turned black like ashes).
This is how you eat it. Scoop the flesh out like you're eating jacket potato.
The texture is very much like tapioca, starchy and dense. It doesn't have strong smell like jackfruit, but it has a distinct light aroma, abit like a burnt jackfruit. It feels like eating 2-3 jacket potatoes portion. I felt so full after finishing this.
The pig's tail is cut into pieces with bones intact. It was salty and i believed it has been marinated, nevertheless it pairs well with the tasteless breadfruit flesh and pickled cucumbers/tomatoes.
Overall tastes good😋
This was my once-in-a-while exotic local meal, besides their famous flying fish.

  3. When I saw your post title, I thought you were ordering food from Breadfruits in Sri Hartamas (the food is good) but you were talking about the breadfruit itself...lol. Have not eaten this fruit before (or seen it sold here before)...looks a bit like jackfruit.
